Founded in 1997 in our garage in San Francisco's Inner Sunset District and now in the second generation,
Sunset Cellars is dedicated to producing high quality,
hand-crafted wines following the “Zen Zin” minimalist winemaking philosophy and respect for our growers’ efforts in the vineyards.

Welcome to Sunset Cellars

Founded by Japanese-American pioneers Katsuko and Doug Sparks in our garage in San Francisco's Inner Sunset, Sunset Cellars believes in “Zen Zin” a minimalist winemaking style and respect for our grower's efforts in the vineyards. Our winemaking objective is to express and refine the flavors and characteristics created in the vineyard. All grapes are hand-sorted before crushing. Wines are fermented in half-ton containers and punched down by hand. Racking, done when necessary, is as gentle as possible, and aging features the restrained use of new oak, to enhance the grapes' flavors and not overpower them. Our goal is to develop supple wines with ample fruit that celebrate the distinguishing characteristics produced in different regions and vineyards.

Sunset Cellars emphasizes red wine varieties including our Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Charbono, but we also make the occasional white.

Our Estate Vineyard

Green Valley of Solano County is tucked into a corner of Solano County, between the larger Suisun Valley to the east and Napa Valley to the west. Its proximity to San Pablo Bay gives it a maritime climate, with low clouds and morning fog. While most Green Valley vineyards are planted on the valley floor, our vineyards are nestled against the hills on a west-facing bench in upper Green Valley. Similar to some of the best Napa vineyards across the Vaca Mountains, the soils in our vineyards are volcanic and rocky. Cool mornings and warm summer days help grapes retain fresh acidity while ripening evenly and fully.
Barbera
Since 1998, Barbera has been our flagship wine, winning numerous awards from many national and international wine competitions including several Best of Show, Double Golds, and Chairman's “Unanimous Gold” Award. One of the keys to our Barbera success is matching the vineyard site with the clone selection.
Our Barbera clone has small, loose clusters and small berries, in sharp contrast to much of the Barbera grown in California, which typically has much larger clusters and berries. The clone is so obscure it doesn't have a formal name that we know of. What we do know is that its grapes translate into consistently deep color and concentration suitable for the long-aging style of Barbera we practice.
