Guiness McFadden

McFadden Farm, Potter Valley

2001 ZINFANDEL

MCFADDEN FARM

WINEMAKER'S NOTES:
Bright cherry and strawberry aromas, characteristic of this vineyard, lead to jammy blackberry and cranberry flavors with hints of spice and dark stone fruit. The touch of Petite Sirah, from neighboring Redwood Valley, enhances the wine's depth and richness. Sometimes we wonder just why we trudge up that steep, rocky hill to keep checking the fruit, then we taste the wine...and remember.

APPELLATION:
Potter Valley (Mendocino County)

VINEYARD:
McFadden Farm primarily grows white wine grape varieties, but a small block on a rocky, south-facing hillside has Zinfandel vines about 35 years old that ripen in most--but not all--years. McFadden Farm's crops are all certified organically grown. It is known for its organic herbs as well as its grapes.

VINTAGE:
Cooler weather following an early September heat spike allowed the grapes to hang on the vines until the first week of October. The earlier heat contributed to slightly higher sugars than in previous years, but the season's cool finish maintained sufficient acidity to balance the sugar and fruit intensity.

COMPOSITION:
Zinfandel 96%, Petite Sirah 4%, both from certified organic growers.

AWARD:
Earth Friendly Grower's Award
- El Dorado County Fair
